Your smartphone has suddenly started behaving in a strange way: What do you do?

07.03.2016

Nowadays people cannot imagine their lives without a cell phone in the pocket. It is true that a smartphone has become something more important than just a phone. It is in fact a tiny PC, which is easy to use virtually everywhere, and, therefore, we rely on our pocket buddies more and more when organizing our life. For example, we can learn about the latest world news or check the e-mail instantaneously; we can also watch the newest movies, listen to music or just play games from our smartphones.

So what do you do if your favorite device starts behaving in a strange way all of a sudden? This is what we will focus on today. You will learn about the first aid you can provide for your phone. Both Android and Windows operating systems will be covered.

To start with, the most common signs of malfunction of the phone are freezing, long response time, and the so-called glitches. Typically, these problems occur when your device is overloaded with different applications, photo, and video files.

The easiest way to rectify the situation is to remove unnecessary programs and files. Check out where exactly they are located, and if the files are stored in the phone memory, then move them to the memory card if possible. Programs can be removed if you choose Settings → Programs tabs from the main menu. Some of the programs can be moved to the memory card, at least partially.

If putting in order and removing unnecessary files has not improved the situation or you just don’t have time to perform it, then you can always use the Reset to Factory Settings function of your phone. Remember that resetting your phone means deleting all information from it. Therefore, before restoring your phone to factory settings it is desirable to save all important information, e.g., contact lists.

The easiest way to save the contact list is to synchronize your device with your Google account. In this case, you need to know the email address and password registered with the account. If this is not possible, you can create a backup on your memory card. In most devices, this is done in the Main menu by clicking Settings→ Backup or Backup and Reset tabs. Go to this tab and use tips to backup or restore an existing phone. Backup can also be done by using applications, for examples, Titanium Backup or Helium.

How do I restore the factory settings?

It is not difficult; just go to your smartphone Settings and scroll to Backup or Backup and restore tabs. At this point, select "Recover (reset) setting". After that, you must wait a little, and the phone will tell you what to do next. If you choose reset to factory settings, we recommend formatting the memory card as well, but first be sure to move all the files to your PC.

Phone malfunctions partially occur due to corrupted files, so we recommend moving photos and videos to a computer or another storage.

You can also use your phone "deep cleaning" function or Hard Reset. Hard Reset is restoring the factory system settings and cleaning up all system information, including installed software, contacts, and SMS.

ATTENTION! Reset can only be carried out if the device is turned off or is frozen, and the phone battery is not more than 50% charged. To do this, go to the Android system recovery menu and push reset. This menu can be entered by using a combination of certain keys.

Now get acquainted with sample combinations in most popular phone brands.

Samsung

As soon as you turn the phone off, press 3 buttons: Volume Up (+), Home button and the Power button and wait for the menu to load. In the menu, use the Volume buttons to select wipe data/factory reset option and press the power button to confirm. In the menu that appears, confirm your selection and select Yes - delete all data. After the procedure, select Reboot now to properly boot the system.

LG

After turning off the device, press 2 buttons: Volume Down (-) and the Power button. When the LG logo appears on the display, release the Power button but continue holding the Volume Down button (-), and immediately re-press the Power button. In some models, you must let go of both buttons and press them again. After the reset confirmation window appears on the screen, release both keys. In this menu, using the Volume buttons you need to select the command Yes, and press the Power button to confirm the reset. The next step is to re-confirm your decision. After the reset, wait until the system is fully loaded.

HTC

When the device is completely turned off, hold down two buttons: Volume Down (-) and the Power button. Once the menu appears, release the button. Use the volume buttons to select the factory reset and press the power button to confirm your selection. After that, you should wait until the reset process is completed.

Sony

It is very difficult to identify any common method for the devices of this brand, because practically each specific model uses its own method. Typically, a hardware reset is performed using a specific Reset button. This button can be found in a lot of devices where the battery cannot be accessed, i.e., monolithic devices, and which, therefore, cannot be restarted by simply removing the battery. This button is usually recessed somewhere on the housing to avoid accidental clicks. You need to press the Reset Button and wait until there is a vibration indicating that the restore process has started.

Fly

Once you turn off the device, press 2 buttons: Volume Up (+) and the Power button. When Android logo appears on the display, release the power button; meanwhile, continue to hold (about 5-10 seconds) the Volume Up (+) button until the Recovery menu appears. Use the volume keys to select wipe data / factory reset (some models use only the volume down button for this purpose) and confirm your choice by pressing the Power button (some models use the Volume up button for this purpose). In the same way confirm your selection in the next menu and then click Yes - delete all user data. Now you just have to wait until the execution is complete. Once the process of updating the settings is finished, a menu appears in which you must select Reboot now to properly boot the system.

Lenovo

In Lenovo smartphones, after turning off the device press 3 buttons: Volume Up (+) Volume Down (-) and the Power button. The Recovery menu should appear on the screen. Use the volume keys to select wipe data / factory reset; to confirm the selection press the Power button. Select Yes - delete all user data in the appearing window using the same method; in this way confirm your choice of Hard Reset function. After resetting the settings the device will restart. However, in some smartphones there is no automatic restart. In this case, select reboot system now in the Recovery window to force the system to restart.

In recent years, there has been a great demand for smartphones with the Windows operating system. Most famous representatives of smartphones running this operating system are Nokia and Microsoft brands.

Microsoft and Nokia

There are 2 ways to reset the settings for devices with Windows OS:

  1. After switching off the device, press 2 buttons: Volume Down (-) and the Power button. Hold them for 10-15 seconds until the device starts vibrating. Then release both keys and the device will reboot. Once the restarting starts, press and hold for a few seconds the Volume Down button (-). If you have done everything correctly, the "!" symbol will appear on the screen. This means that you are in the service menu and the volume button can be released. Now press the following key combination: Volume Up (+), Volume Down (-), the Power button, and the Volume Down button (-). The image of spinning gear will appear on the screen and underneath you will see the line indicating that the setting reset is complete. You must not use the device until the recovery process is complete.
  2. When the device is switched off completely, press 3 buttons: Volume Down (-), the Power button and the Camera button. You should hold them for 10-15 seconds until there is a vibration. Then release the Power button and continue holding the Volume down button (-), and the Camera button for about 5 more seconds. Now the smart phone is restored to factory settings.

It is worth noting that you may not use the above methods with all devices. Some manufacturers use individual methods of resetting to factory setting in some specific phone models.

If none of the above methods has helped you to bring back the desired speed to your smartphone, then we recommend that you replace the software. You will need to contact the service center for this purpose, so that there are no problems with the device functioning in the future.
