How to Clean LCD Module and Glue the Film

29.07.2015

In our previous article we’ve described how separators help to disassemble the display modules. However, it is not enough to use only the separator to repair the spare part. After glass disconnection you will need to remove the adhesive or an OCA film from the display and glue a new film.

Some time ago it was very popular to use various cleaners for glue removing. Firstly, the liquid was poured on the display surface, then the glue was cut with the blade knife. Such method is very expensive because it requires a large amount of cleaning liquids. There also exists another way to remove the adhesive. You will require a soldering iron and a tip with a blade for that.

It’s time to leave behind the old and uncomfortable glue removing methods. Chinese makers offer new devices to feed and remove an ultraviolet (UV) glue, and to laminate with an OCA film.

UV Glue Removing Machines

Let’s start from the glue removing machines. Nowadays you can find new devices, which help to cut the glue from the display module after glass unsticking. Below, on the picture you may see how the module looks like after the glass was removed. Obviously, there is still much work to be done.

The module after the glass removing

This professional equipment is the best way to remove the glue/film residue and to save the LCD module at the same time. We offer three models of glue removing machines: AS-956H, AS-958P and AS-960N.

 Glue removing machines

In fact, operating principles of these devices don’t differ.

Each of them has a control panel, where you can set the temperature. There is a red rectangular button on the front panel for turning on/off the device. Also, it has an installed platform to fix a module. The blade must be placed on the top of the display. All models offer an option to adjust the height of the blade position. However, only with AS-960N model you can also lock the blade height. This function helps you to cut the glue as smoothly as possible without damaging the polarization film.

The blade can be heated up to 80-90 °C. When the indicator shows the required temperature, place the module on the platform. Put the knife blade tightly on the LCD and move forward the platform.

Hot knife will cut the glue/film and the module will be almost clean from adhesive residue. The glue will remain on the blade. Glue residues can be easily removed with a small amount of cleaner. Anyway, you will use the cleaner to remove fingerprints and dust. There is no need to put the module into a special cleaning liquid.

The above-mentioned models differ by materials and manufacturing companies.

How to Glue the Glass

Start gluing the new glass only after the glue (its residues) or film is removed from the display module.

There are several ways to glue the glass to the LCD module. We will dwell on two most popular – using a glue and OCA film.

How to Use UV Glue to Bond the Glass

Bonding with glue is considered to be the most popular and easiest way. Not so long ago the glue gun was the best tool to feed a glue. Today we would like to offer a new automatic device.

This device has manual and automatic modes. No matter which one you choose, it won’t influence operation of the device. It is more convenient to use the manual mode when you need to stick something small. The automatic feeding will be very useful when you hold a big item and need to use two hands at the same time.

This device makes it possible to set the timer for glue feeding. For example, you’ve set the timer on 1-2 seconds position. It means that the glue will be supplied periodically with the interval of 1-2 seconds.

When you use such interval to feed the glue, actually you will get dots-like application (......). If you increase the interval to 3-4 seconds, you’ll get a dotted line (- - - - -).

Also, AD-982 helps you to save UV glue. As you know, UV glue is rather expensive. The glue dispenser feeds the glue under the pressure, so that nothing is left inside the syringe. You can use it when you need to glue even the smallest parts. The device is really very easy to use.

It has only one small drawback. You will need to buy an additional compressor. Also, it is recommended to use the UV lamp for high-quality gluing and complete drying.

It takes quite a long time to glue the glass with the UV glue. So what can you do when you have to repair several modules at the same time? There is a way out!

How to Use the OCA Film to Bond the Glass

OCA film is an optically transparent adhesive film. It has been on the market for not so long but it has proved itself quite well. OCA film is an analogue of a UV glue. Moreover, it is really easy to work with.

Manufacturers have created a laminator for OCA-film gluing. Laminator makes it easy to glue OCA/polarization film to the glass.

Laminators

In fact, operating principles of all laminators are the same. The vacuum pump fastens the LCD to the bottom platform and the OCA film is fastened to the top platform. There should be 3-5 mm left between the film and the roller. Remove the protective film from the OCA film. When you use an automatic laminator, just press the button to move the bottom platform from the right to the left. In case of a mechanical laminator, use the handle to move the platform from the right to the left.

Actually, that's it. The film is attached to the LCD. Now you can put the glass on the LCD and put the spare part into an autoclave.

All laminators require a compressor or vacuum pump. There are models with built-in and external pumps. In case when the laminator doesn’t have a built-in pump you will need to purchase it separately.

Now let us consider in more detail the following laminator models: AS-701, AS-700A and TBK-R.

Laminators

The housing of AS-701 is made of an aluminum alloy. The bottom platform moves with the help of the handle. AS-701 requires an additional pump.

AS-700A Model also requires an external air compressor. The bottom platform moves automatically. Press the green round button to move it to the left. The top part of the device is made of aluminum.

It might seem that an external pump is only the additional expenses. However, it is also an advantage. In case the laminator or pump is out of order, you will need to buy only one device.

The TBK-R model has a built-in vacuum pump. It means you won’t need to buy the compressor separately. However, it isn’t an automatic model. The bottom platform is moved with the handle.

The main differences between these laminators are manufacturing companies and availability of the vacuum pump.

Let’s sum up

Today we have described new devices used to feed and cut the glue and laminators.
All these devices are designed to prepare a display module to glass sticking. The gluing method is up to you. Both, UV glue and OCA film will cope with this task perfectly.

It takes some time to attach the glass with the UV glue, because the glue should dry completely. So this method won’t suit big service centers.

When you have to repair a lot of smartphones and tablets, use the laminator and autoclave (we are going to deal with them in the next article). These devices can glue the glass to the LCD module in few minutes. You will save not only your time, but also your customers’ nerves. After all, we’ve got so accustomed to our smart devices.
