Battery Usage and Storage Tips

06.04.2012

We offer basic usage, storage, charging and maintenance tips which will help you to prolong cell phones batteries operating life.

Usage and Safety Tips

There are a couple of simple rules you need to follow to ensure long and safe battery operation. First of all you should avoid factors having negative influence on the battery. Here are the most common ones:

Extreme temperatures

Keep the battery away from places where it can become extremely hot or cold. Also avoid sudden temperature difference. Do not use the battery when the temperature is higher than +40°C or lower than -25°C. Ni-Mh and Li-Ion batteries operational features become worse at the temperature lower than -10 °C and 0 °C respectively. Therefore, the phone should be protected from cold when used in low temperature environment for a long time. Also keep the phone away from high temperature areas since it can cause electronic component service life decrease, battery damage, some synthetic materials deformation and melting. Moreover, the battery will not charge at the temperature higher than + 40°C.

  • Water and fire

Keep your battery away from fire or water. Avoid the phone or battery getting wet. Even if they afterwards get dry and operate normally, the circuitry can slowly corrode. Do not throw battery into the fire, it will emit toxic substances which can harm you or explode.

  • Metal objects

Avoid battery terminals contact with metal objects (such as coins, keys, jewelry, etc.). This can lead to fast discharging.

  • Dropping

Avoid cell phone or battery dropping. It can cause shift or damage of internal power supply system and hidden terminals, as well as the whole battery. Use additional protective accessories, for example, cases. Also do not apply much pressure to the battery or place heavy objects on it. This may cause battery damage and internal short circuit.

  • Working on low batteries

Avoid cell phone operation on low battery. Forced mobile phone shutdown will have negative effect on battery service life.

  • Incorrect battery charging and replacement

Shut the phone down before battery replacement. Use only original rechargers recommended by the manufacturers. Don't charge the battery for over 24 hours.

  • Incorrect battery usage and storage

Follow battery usage, storage and charging guidelines from your phone user manual. Store batteries in dry and cool place. Do not ever try to open battery by yourself. It is impossible to repair present-day batteries at home. Nickel batteries shall be "trained" (charged and discharged several times) once in six months, Lithium batteries can be additionally charged once a year to avoid their deep self-discharge (if lithium element voltage becomes less than 3 V it will be impossible to restore it). In case cell phone is not used for a long time (more than one week), charge the battery, remove it from the phone and store separately. Wipe the battery with clean, soft and dry cloth.

Batteries Charging Tips

Since there are various kinds of batteries ways they shall be charged also differ.

Ni-Mh batteries shall be charged only after full discharge (to avoid battery capacity decrease). It is recommended to charge new batteries during 14 hours for the first time.

Li-Ion, Li-Pol batteries do not require preliminary discharge before charging. Charging temperature range shall be from +5 °C to +45 °C. It is recommended to charge new batteries during 5 hours for the first time.

Best performance of the battery can be achieved only after 3-4 first full charge-discharge cycles.

Before usage make sure that your battery is fully charged. Keep in mind that battery can get hot during operation or charging. If you store battery for a long time it can discharge by itself. Thus, if you don't use the battery for some time, remove it from the phone or recharger to avoid capacity decrease. If you don't follow usage and charging rules, nominal capacity of the battery can become much lower.

Batteries Additional Features

  • Ni-Mh batteries have good performance at subzero temperature, have operation life up to 600-800 full charge/discharge cycles (if used properly). However, they have so called "memory effect".
  • Li-Ion batteries do not have any "memory effect" at all. However, they have higher internal impedance, especially when used at subzero temperature. This can cause spontaneous phone shutdown during call or conversation in frosty environment. If used properly, this kind of batteries can stand up to 500-600 full charge/discharge cycles.
  • Li-Pol batteries also lack any "memory effect". If used properly, they stand up to 300-400 full charge/discharge cycles.
