October, a month of battles between iOS, Windows and Android

25.10.2012

At the present time everybody may notice the  information war in the digital technologies field. October 2012 can be named as remarkable month, right now we can see the desperate struggle between the world-known brands: both  the cell phone producers as Apple, Samsung, LG, Nokia, BlackBerry etc, and the cell phone operating system developers as Windows, iOS (Apple), R.I.M. (BlackBerry), Android (Google) are competing for the world leadership.

Now we can see the first loss - the Symbian Ltd. The consortium was founded by Psion, Nokia, Ericsson and Motorola in 1998, later it was joined by Siemens, Panasonic, Fujitsu, Samsung, Sony and Sanyo, and now it’s completely passed to the Nokia ownership.

In accordance with the April-June 2012 statistics data the world’s market situation is as follows:

1. Android (Google Inc.): 104, 8 millions of sold products; 68, 1% share in the world trade.
2. iOS (used by iPhone from Apple Inc.): 26 millions of sold products; 16, 9% share in the world trade.
3. BlackBerry (Research in Motion Ltd.): 7, 4 millions of sold products; 4, 8% share in the world trade.
4. Symbian (Nokia belle) (mainly Nokia Corp.): 6, 8 millions of sold products; 4.4% share in the world trade.
5. Windows (Microsoft Corp.): 5, 4 millions of sold products; 3.5% share in the world trade.
6. Linux: 3, 5 4 millions of sold products;   2, 3% share in the world trade.
7. Other: 100 thousand pieces; 0, 1% share in world trade.

Under the pressure one of the giants and pioneers in the cell phone industry Motorola capitulated, on August 15th, 2011 the company was passed into the Google ownership.

The concern Research In Motion, RIM (BlackBerry producer) also yielded its position. During 8-9 October, 2011 all the smartphones of this brand  lost the connection with Messenger service and electronic mail; the servers were not able to provide service to 70 million clients and died. This incident, which didn’t influence the sales at that time, actually shook clients’ faith and caused the shares price cut .

In order to avoid the sales slump the RIM had offered for sale their new tablet PlayBook, but it wasn’t successful. The platform 7.1, which is still used by RIM, is not stable and does not offer the new applications,  that are available  in iPhones and other main RIM competitors. The complete failure stopped the PlayBook sales in the USA market. There are rumors spread that Samsung is going to buy RIM at the low price in the nearest future.

This year one of the leaders of electronics industry, the Sony Corporation is considering the option of firing 10.000 employees all over the world within the procedure of company reorganization. Another globaltelecommunications equipment producer,  Alcatel-Lucent declared the staff reduction of 5.000 employees.

On  October 23th Apple presented a new iPad Mini, which in spite of the advertised advantages (7.9-inch Multi-Touch display, 7.2 mm depth and battery rated for 10 hours of work) is not showing the expected results. The point is that the device is overpriced in comparison with the competitors, the price for 16, 32 and 64 GB iPad Mini is 329, 429 and 529 Euro correspondingly. For instance, Asus Nexus 7 Google, presented on 27th July, 2012 has almost the same specifications (1GB RAM, quad-core processor, 4.1 Android OS and 7-inch touchscreen) but the price for 16GB device is 249USD. After the 32GB model presentation the price of 16 GB device is  to be reduced to 199USD per unit.

The new battle is planned for tomorrow, on October 26th the official presentation of Windows 8 is scheduled. The party will be joined by Dell Latitude 10 that is based on the abovementioned OS. Due to  rumors the device will be equipped with processor  1.8 GHz, 2GB RIM and Gorilla Glass.
